The Baby Lock Gallant is a long-arm quilting machine with its own needle system, bobbin, carriage, and care schedule. Its manual says the Gallant uses a round-shank System 134 needle; do not substitute a flat-shank home-machine needle or carry these instructions over to another machine. Check the manual for the exact size and setup for the thread, fabric, and batting.
When stitches skip#
The Gallant manual lists a bent, dull, damaged, or improperly installed needle; incorrect needle size; tightly framed fabric; thread tension; and incorrect threading as possible causes. Replace a needle that has struck a hard object or is bent, and install it in the position shown in the manual. The machine is timed for its System 134 needle, so needle-system compatibility is a machine requirement, not a general recommendation for domestic flat-bed machines.
For persistent skipping, check frame tension, threading, and the needle/thread/fabric/batting combination one at a time. The manual does not make one needle size or tension value right for every quilt. If timing, throat-plate damage, or another internal problem is suspected, contact an authorized Baby Lock technician.
Clean and oil the hook as specified#
The Gallant manual directs owners to unplug the machine before maintenance or work near the needle. For this model, it identifies the bobbin hook assembly as the regular oiling point and recommends oiling at each bobbin change and before sewing after the machine has sat unused for several days. It assigns internal lubrication to an authorized technician at 24 months or 10 million stitches, whichever comes first. These are Gallant-specific instructions, not a service schedule for other machines.
Use only the manual’s cleaning steps and light sewing-machine oil at the stated hook point. Do not assume that a different machine should be oiled on the same schedule or at the bobbin. If a thread lock, obstruction alert, or handwheel resistance remains after the manual’s user checks, stop and contact your retailer or Baby Lock support.
For care beyond the Gallant-specific hook instructions, follow the maintenance section of the exact machine manual; long-arm and flat-bed machines can have different access and oiling rules. For a shared safety check, see needle-break safety checks.
