This checklist is for the BERNINA 990 and its current manual. It summarizes selected entries from the manual’s troubleshooting section; it is not a universal repair guide or a substitute for checking the manual edition for your machine.

If the machine will not start#

The BERNINA 990 manual says to check that the mains plug is connected at the socket and machine, and that the socket has power. It also lists room temperature: when the machine has been stored in a very cold or warm room, the manual says to place it in a warm room for an hour before use. If the machine is damaged, the manual directs the owner to a BERNINA dealer rather than a user repair.

If a needle breaks#

Check that the needle is inserted fully and in the orientation shown in the manual. The manual also lists pulling fabric, pushing thick fabric, knotted thread, and an unsuitable presser foot as possible causes. Feed the fabric evenly. For thick seams, the manual identifies the Jeans Foot #8 as one suitable foot and mentions a height-compensation tool. That is BERNINA 990 guidance; it does not establish a maximum thickness or a foot choice for another model.

If stitches are uneven#

The manual lists several setup checks: upper tension that is too tight or too loose, thread feeding from the spool, a bent or blunt needle, poor-quality needle or thread, an unsuitable needle/thread pairing, and incorrect threading of the upper or lower path. It also says to check the supplied bobbin case and feed the fabric evenly. If the stitch plate or hook tip is damaged, contact a BERNINA dealer for repair rather than attempting to reshape it.

The 990 manual routes a defective sewing light to a BERNINA dealer. Check the Settings before treating the light as defective, and do not open the machine to replace an electrical part.

If the first checks do not resolve the symptom, stop and contact a dealer. These entries do not establish that the same steps or service boundaries apply to other BERNINA models. For a shared symptom explanation, see needle-break checks. For care and cleaning, follow the exact BERNINA 990 manual rather than transferring another model’s access or oiling steps.
