Use this guide only after confirming that the English bernette 37 manual, document 5060007.0.04 dated June 2023, applies to your machine. The current US model page links a later manual; its contents and equivalence to the 2023 edition were not established in the evidence used here. The shared b37/b38 workbook is a teaching aid, not a substitute for the operating manual. Start with how to match your machine and manual.

One documented stretch-stitch example#
In the 2023 b37 manual, pattern 04 is a narrow stretch stitch described for knit fabrics and bias seams, including a seam that can be pressed open. The listed setup is pattern 04, Zigzag foot, and thread tension 3–6. That range belongs to this stitch in this edition. It is not a universal b37 tension recommendation. This guide does not assign width, length, needle/thread, or clearance values for pattern 04; check those details in the manual that came with your unit.
Test and correct only what you observe#
The manual says speed, fabric type, and layer count can change the stretch-pattern result. Test on a scrap of the actual fabric and layers before sewing the garment. If the test pattern is compressed, the manual directs turning balance toward “+”; if it is drawn out, turn toward “–”. Make a small adjustment, test again, and record the result. The source gives no numeric balance increment, so do not assume one turn amount works for every sample.
Stop if the needle touches the presser foot or plate, bends, or deflects. Do not continue to compensate for unsafe clearance with the balance control. This is a model-and-edition-bounded setup example, not a full knit seam tutorial or capacity rating. For another stitch, needle choice, or a b38 machine, use the corresponding exact manual rather than transferring these values.
