Use the threading passage from the Janome HD9 Instruction Book only after matching the exact HD9 model and manual. The product page and book establish the HD9 Professional route, but they do not prove that every HD9 variant or regional machine uses the same procedure. See the official Janome HD9 Instruction Book.

Prepare and route the thread#

Raise the needle fully and lift the presser foot, then switch the machine off before following the heavy-thread route. The book directs the thread from the spool to the guide from behind, across the guide plate, and between the pre-tension disks. Follow the manual’s diagram for the exact guide geometry. If the thread twists excessively, the book describes passing it through three guide holes; this is a conditional anti-twist path, not a required route for every thread.

For this section, Janome recommends synthetic thread sizes 20–30, warns against size 40 or finer because it may break, and specifies left-twist thread. Keep those labels exactly as printed. The source does not define a universal conversion to another thread-numbering system or diameter.

After threading, follow the full manual for needle and foot selection and make a test on the actual material and layers. The threading passage does not set a maximum leather or fabric thickness. Stop if thread snags, breaks repeatedly, or the needle deflects; do not compensate by forcing the material or changing unrelated controls. For a part-fit question, verify the exact HD9 variant with Janome rather than relying on this threading guide.
