The Elna eXplore 3210/3230 manual describes a twin-needle hem as an option for knit fabric and calls for a stretch twin needle. It gives one shared procedure for the two models, but their upper-tension references differ: the 3230 uses Auto, while the 3210 setup card shows 4 with a 3–5 adjustment range. Those are model-specific starting references, not a promise that every knit, thread, or layer combination will sew the same way.
Set up the twin needle#
Before changing the needle, switch the machine off. Install the twin needle and the additional spool pin, then thread the machine as for single-needle sewing while using both spool pins. Thread each needle separately from front to back. The built-in needle threader cannot be used with a twin needle.
The manual permits straight stitch. For any other stitch, keep the width at 3 mm or less. Before sewing under power, turn the flywheel by hand and confirm that both needles clear the foot. The width limit and clearance check apply to this manual’s method; do not transfer them to another Elna model.
Test the hem on the actual knit#
Fold a short sample hem using the same fabric and number of layers as the project. Sew slowly and check the top and underside, stretch, and recovery. The manual explains that the bobbin thread zigzags beneath a twin-needle hem, allowing it to stretch with the fabric, but the result still depends on the knit and setup. If the needle touches the foot, stop and correct the setup before sewing. Use the manual supplied with the machine if its edition or controls differ from the cited eXplore 3210/3230 book.
