A twin needle sews two parallel rows with two needle points on one shank. It can make a useful knit hem, but needle spacing alone does not establish that a machine, foot, stitch, or needle plate can accommodate it.
Confirm the machine before threading#
Check the exact manual for the permitted needle system, twin-needle type and width, compatible foot, eligible stitches, and any twin-needle mode. Follow the listed thread path; some machines require the two upper threads to pass through guides differently. Hand-thread the twin needle if the manual or threader instructions require it.
Turn the machine off before installing the needle. Set the listed foot and stitch, and keep the selected stitch width within the model’s limit. With the presser foot and needle plate in place, turn the handwheel slowly by hand in the direction specified by the manual. Check the full needle path for contact before using the motor. If either needle touches the foot or plate, stop and change the setup; do not try to sew through the interference.
SCHMETZ lists Stretch Twin examples at 2.5/75 and 4.0/75, and describes stretch or Universal twin needles for some knit hems. Those are product examples, not widths every domestic machine accepts. Brother support guidance for its listed models, including the CS7000X, sets a 5 mm maximum stitch width and requires a clearance check. The 5 mm figure is a stitch-width limit; it is not the distance between the two needle points. See the CS7000X twin-needle reference for its model-listed 2 mm needle.
Test the hem#
Use matching upper threads when the manual calls for them, and sew slowly on the actual knit and number of layers. A stabilizer can help control tunneling or ruffling, but first test a small hem with the material and stabilizer you plan to use. Check the underside, stretch, and recovery; a balanced top view does not guarantee a wearable hem.
If stitches skip, the knit puckers, or a needle bends, stop and check the type, insertion, thread path, and machine-specific stitch setting. If the twin needle strikes anything or a fault persists, use the model’s support or service path.
