Brother publishes separate procedures for a standard zipper foot and its adjustable zipper and piping foot, SA161. Both support answers list CS7000X, but each applies only to the models and attachment shown on its own current support page. Confirm the exact machine and foot before sewing.
Standard zipper-foot procedure#
Brother’s listed procedure selects center straight stitch 01. To sew the right side of the zipper, attach the shank to the foot’s left pin; to sew the left side, use the right pin. Lower the needle into the foot’s side notch, turn the handwheel by hand, and confirm that the needle clears the foot before sewing. The procedure sews from the bottom of the zipper toward the top, then repositions the foot for the second side. Keep the needle away from the zipper itself; contact can break the needle and cause injury.
That stitch number and foot-position sequence are Brother’s model-listed instructions, not general zipper settings. If the machine’s manual or foot differs, follow that documentation.
Adjustable zipper and piping foot SA161#
Brother describes the SA161 as adjustable along the edge of a zipper or piping. For the support answer’s listed models, attach the foot, select a straight stitch, lower the needle with the handwheel, and slide the foot so the needle sits in its opening. Turn the handwheel again to verify that the needle does not hit the foot before powered sewing. The support answer lists CS7000X among the covered models; the product page’s current model list and any adapter condition remain authoritative for other machines.
As checked on September 26, 2026, Brother’s SA161 product page marks the foot discontinued. Its published model list does not include CS7000X, while Brother’s separate setup answer still lists that model. Brother does not explain the difference between the two lists. The discontinued label does not establish whether retailers have stock or name a replacement. Verify the exact part and current model guidance before buying; do not assume another zipper or piping foot is equivalent.
The guide can be positioned for different piping dimensions, but the page does not establish a universal cord size, needle, stitch length, fabric capacity, or fit for unlisted models. Make a sample with the actual zipper or cord and fabric layers. If clearance changes at a bulky point, stop and recheck the setup by hand.
For the broader choice between zipper types, feet, and closure handling, see the domestic zipper and piping guide.
