Appliqué stitching holds a shaped fabric piece against a base layer while stitching around its edge. This example follows the US Brother CS7000X Sewing Guide and linked stitch chart. Its selections are specific to that model and chart; use your own machine’s manual and chart before copying a stitch number or setting.

Select a stitch from the CS7000X chart#

The Sewing Guide says to secure the appliqué by basting or gluing it to the base fabric, attach zigzag foot J, and select a permitted stitch. The linked chart lists a blanket stitch for appliqués. In its 70-stitch model column, the blanket stitch is stitch 11 with foot J. The chart shows a default width of 3.5 mm, a 2.5–7.0 mm width range, a default length of 2.5 mm, and a 1.6–4.0 mm length range. Confirm the matching column and stitch on the exact machine before sewing; the guide warns that stitch selections differ by model.

These chart values are setup information, not a guarantee of edge coverage on every fabric. Start at the charted default, then make a sample using the same appliqué, base fabric, layers, and thread as the project. Brother advises trial sewing and says fabric thickness, stabilizer, stitch, and layer count can affect the result. The source does not prescribe one stabilizer, needle, thread, or width for all materials.

Secure the layers and sew the edge#

Basting keeps the shape in place without placing adhesive on the stitch path. If you use glue, Brother warns not to apply it where the needle will sew: adhesive on the needle or bobbin case can damage the machine. Follow the adhesive maker’s directions and test on a sample before relying on it.

With the appliqué secured and foot J attached, position the sample so the needle will land just outside the appliqué edge, as the Sewing Guide describes. Turn the handwheel toward you to start the needle movement and confirm the stitch begins in the intended place. Sew slowly enough to steer the edge on the sample. Check both sides for missed edge coverage, bunching, or movement before starting the project.

At a corner, stop with the needle in the fabric just outside the appliqué. Raise the presser foot, turn the fabric to redirect the seam, then lower the foot and continue. The guide says not to use reverse stitching or automatic reverse/reinforcement stitching for this appliqué sequence. Follow the guide’s thread securing directions for the stitch you selected.

Keep the example in scope#

This is a sewn-edge example for the Brother CS7000X and its linked US documentation. It is not a digitized embroidery workflow or proof that a similarly named stitch is available on another machine. Check the exact manual, chart, foot, and needle clearance after any setup change. For a broader choice between straight, zigzag, and stretch stitches, see the seam stitch selection guide.
