The HD 4523 has its own SINGER instruction manual. Find it in SINGER’s official manuals library under Heavy Duty, or open the English HD 4523 PDF. Check the model label and the manual supplied with your machine before applying these examples. SINGER’s 4423 product page describes the 4523 as a newer evolution and identifies speed control as an added feature. That product-page comparison does not establish shared settings, manuals, or accessory fit; see the separate 4423 guide.

Needle choices in the 4523 manual#

The manual recommends system 130/705H needles and matching the needle to the thread. Its selection guide maps sizes 70–80 to lightweight fabrics, sizes 80–90 to medium-weight fabrics, size 100/16 to heavy fabrics such as canvas, wool, denim, home décor, fleece, and heavy knit, and size 110/18 to coat-weight wool and upholstery. For the heavy-fabric groups, the manual calls for heavy-duty thread in the needle and all-purpose thread in the bobbin. These are manual chart recommendations, not a promise that any number of layers is within capacity.

Needle ranges in the HD 4523 manual

Controls and a straight-stitch example#

The technical specifications in the 4523 manual give a stitch-width range of 0–6 mm and a stitch-length range of 0–4 mm. These ranges do not override any narrower limit for a particular stitch, foot, or task. The manual says foot pressure can be increased for heavy fabric or decreased for lightweight fabric, and warns not to force the dial past its maximum. It gives no universal pressure number for a fabric type.

For its straight-stitch setup, the manual shows 0 mm width, 2–4 mm length, tension 3–5, and the all-purpose foot with a centered needle position. This is a straight-stitch example, not a general denim recipe. Other stitch examples have their own values and feet. Make a test seam on the same material and layers and check the result before sewing the project.

From the model label to a test seam

The manual describes the HD 4523 as a household machine, not for industrial use. It does not give a maximum fabric thickness or layer count. Do not push or pull the fabric through; stop if the needle bends or strikes the foot or plate. Confirm your exact model, market, revision, needle, thread, selected stitch, and foot in the English HD 4523 manual before changing a setup.
