The Elna eXcellence 780 instruction book uses a twin-needle mode that greys out patterns the machine will not allow. The manual excludes buttonholes, specialty stitches, and monograms in this mode. It says to use the twin needle included with the machine; an alternate needle may strike the plate, foot, or hook and break.

Use the model’s permitted setup#

Before replacing the needle, engage the lockout key as the manual directs. Thread both needles by hand because the built-in needle threader cannot be used with a twin needle. Choose an enabled pattern, zigzag foot A or satin foot F, and thread size #60 or finer, using the manual’s notation. The source does not state a universal needle spacing, so do not infer one from the twin-needle label.

Test the chosen stitch on scrap before sewing the project. Check the needle path and follow the manual’s pivot instructions: raise the needle and presser foot before changing direction. The foot-up-for-pivoting option is unavailable in twin-needle mode. Stop if a needle touches the foot or plate, and return to single-needle mode when the twin-needle work is finished.

These controls apply to the eXcellence 780 manual cited here. Confirm the exact machine and manual revision before using the pattern list or accessory guidance. For shared width and clearance concepts, see the general twin-needle guide.
