The BERNINA 990 manual says to use the 130/705 system and choose needle thickness for the fabric. Its starting groups are 70 or 75 for lightweight fabric, 80 or 90 for medium fabric, and 100, 110, or 120 for heavyweight fabric. These are B990 manual ranges, not a chart for other BERNINA models or household machines in general.
The manual also lists example needle types and ranges:
| BERNINA 990 manual example | Listed range or size | Application described |
|---|---|---|
| Universal 130/705 H | 60/8–120/19 | General sewing across many materials |
| Stretch 130/705 H-S | 75/11–90/14 | Knit and stretch material |
| Jersey/Embroidery 130/705 H SUK | 80/12 | Knitwear, vinyl, and general sewing |
| Jeans 130/705 H-J | 80/12–110/18 | Woven fabric, leather, jeans, and denim |
| Leather 130/705 H LR | 90/14 or 100/16 | Leather and imitation leather |
The range is a model reference, not a recommendation to use every size for every fabric. The manual says the thread should sit in the needle’s long groove and pass through the eye. Thread that is too thin can move excessively and contribute to breakage or skipped stitches; thread that is too thick may rub at the groove or eye and break.
Choose the needle type for the material, then test the thread, fabric layers, and stitch. If you are between sizes, use the B990 manual’s fabric and thread guidance and inspect the sample for damage and clean stitch formation. Check the machine’s current needle instructions before insertion or specialty work. For the general process, see the needle-type selector and thread-matching guide.
