A double-eye 705 DE needle has one needle point with two eyes. It takes two upper threads through the same point, creating a decorative effect; a twin needle has two points and makes two rows. SCHMETZ lists its Double Eye Needle as size NM 80. The current product page heading says “Quick Threading Needle,” but its URL and body identify the 705 DE Double Eye product; the 2024 SCHMETZ catalogue also lists Double Eye 705 DE. Check the packet before buying.

A 705 DE needle has one point and two vertically separated eyes for two upper threads; a twin needle has two points and forms two rows. Schematic, not to scale.

Thread and test the two eyes#

First check that the exact machine manual permits system 705 DE, two upper threads, and the stitch you want. Thread both upper paths through the machine’s guides and separation options as its manual directs, then place one thread through the upper eye and the other through the lower eye. The automatic needle threader does not work with this needle; use the manual’s hand-threading route. The bobbin is inserted as usual.

Try the chosen decorative stitch on leftover fabric, starting with the narrowest width. SCHMETZ notes that the usable width depends on the machine: if a thread is no longer held in the upper eye, skipped stitches may follow, so reduce the width. There is no portable maximum. Stop if the needle contacts the foot or plate. For the different two-point setup, see the twin-needle guide; the needle-size guide explains how to check system markings.
